These fertile slopes attracted European settlers, who took the land and cultivated tea, coffee, wheat and flowers. Colonial authorities had little regard for tribal land and customs, and anger erupted into the bloody Mau Mau Rebellion of the 1950's.
Ngai - The Possessor of Brightness
The local Kikuyu believe that Mt Kenya is home to the Supreme Being - Ngai. The mountain is known as Kere Nyaga - Mountain of Brightness, and people living on its slopes always position their houses to face towards this sacred peak.
